FEB 2021 Climate and Energy in My Community

Feb. 18-20, 2021

UAF ED/NRM 593 (1 cr.)

Climate change and energy use influence our lives. Educators and community members from Alaska will learn about climate change and energy, particularly related to wood, a renewable resource. Participants will engage in culturally-responsive K-12 STEM activities, including the Kk’eeyh/Birch unit and Tseek’e/Firewood lesson developed by Association of Interior Native Educators. Participants will be trained by a NASA Education Specialist to make tree measurements using the GLOBE Observer Trees app. We will learn how to calculate the amount of carbon stored in trees and apply that knowledge to our local communities.

Pre-Work (complete prior to Feb. 18, 2021)

Causes of Climate Change 101 Watch the videos (about 30 minutes total) and reflect on climate and energy literacy principles. Submit the discussion post in Blackboard.

Introduction to GLOBE (Under 1 hour total after logging into www.globe.gov)

Review the two lesson activities for the “Energy Choice Activity” in Blackboard or the mailed thumb drive.

We Welcome You

This course will enable you and your students to collaborate with UAF and NASA scientists as wells as educators with Association of Interior Native Educators (AINE), Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) and Arctic and Earth STEM Integrating GLOBE and NASA (SIGNs). Your students will be able to participate in GLOBE Investigations with the possibility to present at the International Virtual Science Symposium.
